Child Safety Tips

Having their child abducted is every parent's worst nightmare. But don't panic. There are steps that you can take to reduce the risk of this happening.

6 Ways to Prevent Child Abduction

1. Never leave your child alone in a public place, car, or stroller.

2. Point out a safe house or houses in your neighborhood, where children can go if they are in trouble.

3. Check older friends of your child and all potential babysitters.

4. Do not use clothing and toys with your child's name on it. A child will less likely to fear someone who knows his/her name.

5. Always accompany your child into a public restroom.

6. Keep an up-to-date color photograph of your child, a Child ID, and medical and dental history, and have your child fingerprinted.

Child abduction is a growing concern and there are simple precautions that you can take to help safeguard your children.

Another thing that you can teach your child is your name, your address and phone number. I remember a story in the news a few months ago about a three year old girl who was found wandering around a hospital. She was taken into care and although she could talk, she couldn't tell her new carers anything about herself which could help reunite her with her family. Children are often unaware of their parent's full name and even fewer can recite their full street address and phone number. Learning these important details doesn't have to be a chore. You can make it a fun game that you can practice in the car. Remember to repeat it every once in awhile as children are so focussed on the here and now that they often forget the details of what they've learnt a few months ago. Also re-visit it whenever you move or change phones.
